Who We Are

Picture
Journey Outreach (JO) is unique in that any and all volunteers are welcome. We have a number of churches participating at this time. Also, many of the people who receive meals also volunteer, which makes for an amazing opportunity for connection and blessing to be manifested in a true community service.

JO started in fall of 2019 as an idea of concerned members community who had a heart for un-homed people in the Bemidji Area in wintertime. Bemidji, Minnesota, is known for unforgiving and cold winters. During the day and especially on the weekends those without homes are left in the elements with no options for hot meals and shelter. Journey Outreach provided a Sunday noon hot meal, clothing, and hygiene supplies.

Our History

Journey Outreach began as a simple meal of sloppy joes, buns, chips, oranges, and bottled water. It was the desire of a young pastor whose heart was to feed the homeless in Bemidji. Hence on a Sunday afternoon in October of 2019, two tables were set up behind the old Pamida building (now St. Michael’s) and a hot meal was provided to everyone who happened to walk by; mostly homeless men and women. We were able to give them a hot meal along with some gently used coats and blankets. Another meal was provided in November and December, three days before Christmas. Due to the weather and serving the meals outside, it was determined we would wait until spring to begin again on a monthly basis.

In January of 2020, it was placed on Joan and Myron’s hearts that this was a mission we felt God was calling us to. We spoke to the pastor and leadership and they were thrilled we wanted to continue on with this on a monthly basis beginning in the spring; more specifically March. Then COVID-19 hit the area and most areas where the homeless “hung out” closed down to help with preventing the spread of the virus. Meals that we had planned to do monthly suddenly turned into weekly. We initially started in the St. Michael’s parking lot; moved to the parking lot west of the County Administration Building; and we currently are using the Calvary Chapel Fellowship Hall during the winter months.

The first meal, approximately 25-30 meals were given; we now average about 130 meals per week to the homeless and those in need. Journey Outreach has grown by leaps and bounds and we give God all the glory in his provision!

Others coming along side to further the Kingdom of God

We have had two enclosed cargo trailers donated to Journey Outreach since we began; thanks to King of the Road Trailer Rental and Sales. One trailer is used to carry a refrigerator, bins of clothing, roasters, and paper products. The other trailer is used to carry loads of furniture, clothing, and other items needed for the homeless and other unfortunate families.

In addition, God’s people have donated financially and through clothing, household goods, to name a few. We have been truly blessed with an abundance to pass on to those in need. Praise God for his generosity!

Bemidji First Assemblies became a partner by taking on providing meals two Sundays out of each month. Many of their members help to cook, serve, and minister those who come to the meal. They do a great job, and we are so blessed to have them on board with us!

We believe that as stated in Matthew 25: 40 ‘Whatever you did for one of my brothers or sisters, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did for me.’
